Surviving Germany — #08
Everyday Life
At the Post Office and Parcel Shop in Germany: Send, Receive, Return — Everything in German
Reading time: ~14 minutes · Deutsche Post, DHL, Hermes, DPD, UPS — all covered · All levels welcome
Germany runs on parcels. Online shopping, returning items, sending documents abroad, picking up missed deliveries, deciphering the slip that appeared in your letterbox — postal life in Germany is frequent, specific, and conducted almost entirely in German. This guide covers every scenario from the moment a yellow slip lands in your letterbox to the moment you walk out with exactly what you came for.
The German postal system is a multi-carrier ecosystem that works remarkably well — once you understand how it fits together. Deutsche Post handles letters and the yellow Post boxes. DHL handles most parcels. But Hermes, DPD, GLS, and UPS all deliver to Germany too, each with their own drop-off network, tracking systems, and pickup points. Knowing which carrier delivered your parcel tells you where to pick it up, which app to open, and what to say when you get there.
This guide covers it all — from the counter at the Postfiliale to the automated Packstation locker, from sending a registered letter (Einschreiben) to tracking a parcel that seems to have vanished.

Know your carriers — which is which
Germany's parcel market is served by multiple carriers, each with their own pickup points, apps, and tracking systems. Knowing which carrier delivered your parcel tells you exactly where to go.
Deutsche Post / DHL
Yellow
Germany's dominant carrier. Letters via Deutsche Post, parcels via DHL. Packstation network. Pick up at yellow Postfilialen or DHL Paketshops (often in supermarkets). App: DHL Paket.
Hermes
Green
Large parcel network — often used by Otto, About You, and smaller retailers. Pick up at Hermes PaketShops (often in convenience stores). App: MyHermes.
DPD
Red
Used by many online retailers. Pick up at DPD Pickup Parcelshops. App: DPD. Notification usually comes by text or email with a link.
GLS
Blue/Orange
Common for B2B and some retailers. GLS ParcelShops for pickup. Less common for private customers but increasingly used.
UPS
Brown
International and business-focused. UPS Access Points for pickup — often in petrol stations or shops. App: UPS Mobile.
FedEx / TNT
Red/Purple
Primarily international. FedEx Locations for pickup. Less common for domestic German deliveries.
Pro tip — the parcel redirect
If you order frequently online, register with the DHL Packstation system — it's free and takes 10 minutes. You get a 6-digit "Postnummer" and access to all Packstation lockers. From then on you can redirect any DHL parcel to a locker near your home or office, collect at any time 24/7, and never deal with a missed delivery slip again.
03
The missed delivery slip — Benachrichtigungszettel decoded
You come home to find a yellow or white slip in your letterbox. This is the Benachrichtigungszettel — the notification that a delivery attempt was made. Every piece of information on it matters. Here is what each part means.
Benachrichtigungszettel — decoding the slip
Sendungsnummer / Sendungsbezeichnung
Your tracking number — enter this on the carrier's website

Zweiter Zustellversuch am [Datum]
Second delivery attempt on [date] — DHL often tries again the next day
Online-Umbuchung möglich: [QR-Code / URL]
Online redirect possible — you can send the parcel to a different address or Packstation
Storage deadline — Aufbewahrungsfrist
DHL typically stores parcels for 7 working days at the pickup point. Hermes stores for 7 days. DPD stores for 5–7 days. After this deadline, the parcel is returned to the sender. Check the slip for the exact deadline and collect promptly — the shops holding parcels cannot always call you if it's about to expire.

The Packstation — DHL's automated locker system
Packstationen are yellow automated DHL locker towers found outside supermarkets, train stations, and on street corners throughout Germany. They operate 24/7 and are one of Germany's most useful daily conveniences once you know how to use them.

You
Ich möchte ein vorfrankiertes Paket einlegen.

You can send parcels from a Packstation, but the parcel must already have a DHL label — either printed or a QR code from the DHL app. You can print the label at the Packstation using the DHL app's "Paket einlegen" function.
The DHL Paket app is one of the most useful apps to have on your phone in Germany. It lets you: track parcels in real time, redirect deliveries to a Packstation, generate QR codes for sending parcels, set delivery preferences, and receive push notifications when something arrives. Download it immediately — it removes 90% of parcel-related stress.

Postcode is always 5 digits. Always include your return address (Absender) on the back of the envelope or in the top left corner of the front.

08
Shipping options — what to choose and why
Domestic — standard
DHL Paket
Standard parcel service within Germany. Delivery next working day in most cases. Tracking included. Up to 31.5kg. The default choice for most private shipments.
Domestic — urgent
DHL Paket Express
Guaranteed next-day delivery by a specific time. Significantly more expensive. Use for time-critical documents or items.
Letters — secure
Einschreiben
Registered mail. Signature required on delivery. Legal proof of sending and receipt. Essential for contracts, official notices, and anything that matters legally.
International
DHL Paket International
Tracked international shipping. Delivery times and prices vary by country. Always fill in the customs declaration (Zollinhaltserklärung) accurately for non-EU destinations.
09
Sending abroad — international parcels
International parcel — Internationales Paket
You
I'd like to send this parcel to Turkey / Poland / the USA.
Staff
What is the content of the parcel, and what is the value of the goods?
You
Es enthält Kleidung und Bücher — Gesamtwert etwa 80 Euro.
It contains clothing and books — total value approximately €80.
You
Muss ich eine Zollinhaltserklärung ausfüllen?
Do I need to fill in a customs declaration?
Yes — required for all shipments to non-EU countries. The staff will provide the form. Fill it in accurately — incorrect customs declarations can cause delays and fines at the destination.
You
How long does delivery to Turkey roughly take?
You
Are there restrictions on the contents — what am I not allowed to send?
For regular international money or parcel transfers to family abroad, comparing carriers is worth the effort. DHL is reliable but not always cheapest. Services like Hermes, DPD, or specialist international carriers sometimes offer significantly better rates for specific country corridors. Check parcel comparison sites like parcello.de or sendcloud before assuming DHL is always the right choice.
10
Returning items — Rücksendung / Retoure
Germany has one of the world's highest online return rates — and the infrastructure to match. Most online retailers include a return label in the parcel or make one available digitally. Here is what every return scenario looks like in German.
Returning an online order — Retoure aufgeben
You
Ich möchte dieses Paket zurückschicken. Es ist eine Retoure von Zalando / Amazon / Otto.
I'd like to return this parcel. It's a return from Zalando / Amazon / Otto.
Staff
Haben Sie ein Retourenlabel dabei?
Do you have a return label with you?
You
Yes, here is the label — it's printed on. / I have a QR code on my phone.
Many retailers now send QR codes instead of printed labels. The post office or Paketshop scans the QR code and prints the label for you on the spot — free of charge.
You
I don't have a return label — can I have it printed here?
You
Do I get a receipt as proof of the return?
Always ask for and keep the receipt. It proves you dropped off the parcel in case the retailer claims they never received it.
One phrase worth memorising: "Ich brauche einen Einlieferungsbeleg bitte" — "I need a deposit receipt please." This is the proof that you handed over the return. Without it, if the parcel goes missing, you have no evidence. Some shops hand these out automatically. If they don't, always ask.
11
Tracking and problems — when things go wrong
Parcel not arrived — Paket nicht angekommen
You
I've been waiting for a parcel for a week — the tracking has shown no update for days.
You

Could you track my parcel in the system? The tracking number is [number].
You
The tracking shows "delivered" — but I never received the parcel.
You
I'd like to initiate a trace / submit a tracing request.
A "Nachforschungsauftrag" is a formal investigation request. DHL, Hermes, and other carriers accept these online or at the counter. The carrier investigates and responds within several days.
You
The parcel was delivered damaged — what should I do?
Photograph the damage before opening further. Report immediately to the carrier. Also contact the sender — they may be able to claim through their shipper's insurance.

The Briefkasten — your letterbox and German post culture
The humble Briefkasten (letterbox) is where Germany's postal culture begins. A few things to know that newcomers frequently discover too late.
| The rule / situation | What it means in practice |
| Your name must be on the letterbox | Postmen and couriers will not deliver to an unlabelled letterbox. Add your name immediately after moving in. A label or tape is fine — just make sure it's legible. |
| No advertising (Keine Werbung) | A sticker saying "Keine Werbung / Keine kostenlosen Zeitungen" stops most advertising leaflets from being delivered. Widely used in Germany. |
| Yellow post boxes on the street | Deutsche Post collection boxes. Last collection time is posted on the box. Letters posted after this time go the following day. |
| Important letters by Einschreiben | For anything legally significant — cancellations, official notices, contract changes — send as Einschreiben. Standard post has no proof of delivery. |
| Forwarding address — Nachsendeantrag | When moving, register a forwarding address with Deutsche Post (Nachsendeantrag) — available online or at the post office. Mail is automatically forwarded for up to 24 months. |
Setting up mail forwarding — Nachsendeantrag
You
I've moved and would like my mail forwarded. Where can I submit a forwarding request?
Staff
You can do that right here — or online at deutschepost.de. You need your old and new address plus a photo ID.
You

A final thought: the German postal system is, at its best, extraordinarily efficient. Parcels arrive the next day. Registered letters create legal certainty. The Packstation network means you never have to be home for a delivery. But it rewards those who understand the vocabulary — the Benachrichtigungszettel, the Aufbewahrungsfrist, the Einschreiben, the Nachforschungsauftrag. With this guide and the DHL app on your phone, postal Germany is yours to navigate confidently.
